TIFTON — The Tift area’s baseball run in the Major League Baseball draft continued Wednesday afternoon. Cade Marlowe became the second native of the county selected in two days when he went to the Seattle Mariners in the 20th round.

Marlowe, who played collegiately for West Georgia, spent his high school years at Tiftarea Academy, where he set numerous records.

At West Georgia, Marlowe earned multiple awards. He was named Mr. Wolf by the university and earned honorable mention All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers. Marlowe has been All-Gulf South first team and won the 2019 Gulf South Conference Commissioner’s Trophy.

Far from being just an athletic standout, the psychology major carries a 3.87 GPA and on Wednesday was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team second team for Division II.

He is the highest draft selection from West Georgia since Mike Lilly was also selected in the 20th round in 1985. Marlowe is the first Tiftarea alumnus known to be drafted. Tiftarea opened in 1970.

As a senior, Marlowe hit .389 with five home runs and 39 runs batted in. He set the single season school record with 46 stolen bases in 51 attempts and also holds the career mark at 87.
