CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A Chatsworth woman died Tuesday after shooting her stepfather and then turning the gun on herself, according to the Murray County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Jimmy Davenport said Ashley Abercrombie was found outside of a home on Rebel Lane from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Abercrombie’s stepfather, Steven Rahm, was shot in the wrist and was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Deputy Coroner Jonathan Sosebee said the address was 24 Rebel Lane. He said Abercrombie was 34.
Davenport said Rahm was shot outside of the home Tuesday afternoon around 4:20 and that Abercrombie’s two young children were inside the home at the time and were unharmed.
“This is a tragedy for this family and I can’t begin to emphasize with what they are dealing with and feeling as a family,” Davenport said.
After a call to 911 from Rahm’s wife, who was not home at the time of the shooting and whose name was not released, a deputy who was in the area responded to the scene. Davenport said when the deputy exited his car, he heard a gunshot and found Abercrombie on the property.
Davenport said detectives, who are being assisted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, are trying to determine what led to the shooting of Rahm. Davenport was unsure what kind of gun was recovered from the scene.
“We are still trying to figure out a lot of the circumstances around this and it remains an active and open investigation,” Davenport said. “But I do not believe that there will be any charges filed in the incident.”
