What’s new to read?
We have recently put some money into our Urban Fiction collection. Many of the titles we have purchased were to replace classics that have gone missing over the years, but we have added a number of new titles and authors. Come browse the New Books shelves to see what is in.
Historical romance fans rejoice! Evie Dunmore has written “Bringing Down the Duke.” This is the first installment in a series called “A League of Extraordinary Women” and will feature strong female characters who triumph over the existing social order. Annabelle Archer’s Oxford scholarship depends on her recruiting support in the British ruling class for women’s rights. Her target is Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery. Your imagination can probably go from there.
W. Bruce Cameron has written a third Dog’s Purpose novel. “A Dog’s Promise” continues the adventures of Bailey in his various incarnations. Bailey is joined by Lacy, who helps him fulfill some of his responsibilities to his human family. The previous two books were made into films and it is likely this one will be picked up as well.
Kirkus Reviews believes “Before the Devil Fell” might be too creepy for late night reading, so plan accordingly. Neil Olson tells the story of Will Connor, who comes home after years away to take care of his mother who has been injured falling down the back steps under strange circumstances. Will is reluctant to return to his childhood home – his mother had been heavily involved in some sort of New Age spirituality during his childhood and he has a bright new life in Boston with no herbs, potions or incantations. But Will is about to discover that his mother’s practices are not some silly fad, but the latest manifestation of powerful and ancient New England witchcraft.
Moving from Massachusetts to Ethiopia, “The Shadow King” is Maaza Mengiste’s latest novel, set during Mussolini’s 1935 invasion. Hirut is a young orphan girl who has recently started work as a maid in the household of one of Haile Selassie’s officers. The small dramas and problems of her life are rapidly eclipsed by the invading Italians. Watching the slaughter of their men and the total destruction of their world, the women of the household, under the leadership of Hirut (who is not the simple peasant girl she first seems) decides they will fight back with everything they can muster. If you enjoyed “The English Patient” by Michael Ondaatje, give this title a try. Maaza Mengiste is also the author of “The Lion’s Gaze.”
One of the most famous authors of what librarians fondly call “Bonnet Books” is Beverly Lewis. With over three dozen cozy, gentle romances set in Old Order Amish country, Ms. Lewis is the favorite go-to for many readers. The library has her books in regular print, large print, and some titles are even in audiobook format. Our most recent addition is a Large Print edition of “The Timepiece.”
“Ribbons of Scarlet: A Novel of the French Revolution’s Women” is authored by SIX New York Times bestselling authors, telling the stories of six women that have very little in common except they are living during one of the most tumultuous times in world history. Very highly reviewed.
Having your identity stolen is a nightmare. Banks and creditors to alert, federal agencies to contact and credit monitoring can easily become an obsession. But what about people who had their identities stolen before there were computers to help monitor all this information? Axton Betz-Hamilton has written “The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets and Stolen Identity,” describing the more than 20 years her family spent trying to escape a thief that ruined their credit, drained their bank accounts and forced them to leave their home and change their identities. Convinced the thief was someone they knew, the family became secretive and paranoid, isolating themselves to the point Axton struggled with trusting anyone. When she left home and started her own life, it didn’t take long before the thief attacked her assets and Axton decided enough was enough – she would find out who was responsible. And, she did.
Cave diving is one of the most dangerous sports in the world. Many more people have died diving a cave than climbing Everest. “Into the Planet: My Life as a Cave Diver” is the autobiography of Jill Heinerth, a professional cave diver and documentary film maker who regularly goes into places no one else has ever seen. Her work has appeared on the National Geographic Channel, PBS, BBC and numerous other outlets.
Fans of Dirty Jobs’ Mike Rowe may have discovered his podcast “The Way I Heard It” advertised as stories “for the curious mind with a short attention span.” (Find it here, if you are interested https://mikerowe.com/podcast/) If you aren’t excited about listening to podcasts, Mr. Rowe has collected 35 of his favorite little anecdotes about people you may well have heard of. “The Way I Heard It” is an Amazon best seller.
