TIFTON — Second Harvest of South Georgia is preparing for another food distribution in Tifton on May 1.

Eliza McCall, chief marketing officer for Second Harvest, said that the next distribution will be similar to the first one the organization did in Tifton on Apr. 9.

“We ended up serving about 1,750 households,” McCall said. “We’re basing that on the number of boxes we gave out. It went extremely well. We were very pleased with the execution and the turn out. For this being our first big distribution like that in Tifton, we were very pleased.”

She said they are anticipating a similar amount of participation in the May 1 distribution, which will be at the same location, the Georgia Museum of Agriculture.

McCall said that the set up will be almost identical to the first distribution but that different food items will be given out.

Those who are picking up food will stay in their vehicles for the entire distribution. Vehicles will enter the queue at the front parking lot in front of the country store, which can be accessed via Whiddon Mill Road. Once they are registered, they will drive to the back parking lot, where volunteers will put the food either in the trunk, truck bed, or on the roof of the vehicle. Volunteers will not be allowed to hand items directly to people or place them inside the passenger area of the vehicle.

“One thing to note is that it is not limited to Tift County residents,” she said.

Those from nearby counties can come to the food distribution. She also said that anyone needing food before May 1 can text “gethelp” to 619-870-1680.

“That will send them a link to where they can look online and find our partner agencies closest to them,” she said. “In the meantime, while people are waiting on May 1, if they need help they can access it that way. We encourage you to contact them before you go just to make sure nothing’s changed. We know things are constantly in flux and so we have some agencies that have changed their operating hours.”
