TIFTON- A public hearing to discuss the rezoning of a residential property to general business caused a stir on city council when councilman Johnny Terrell from district 3 adamantly opposed the idea.
Robert John Guthrie owns a car lot at Timmons Drive and 7th Street. The property is zoned as residential, despite its general business usage. Guthrie operating the business on residential property is not against the rules, but when he had to tear down a dilapidated building on the property it meant he couldn’t rebuild the structure without getting a rezoning application passed with the city council.

“Put it on Eighth Street or Main Street,” said Terrell “Why would you want to come into our neighborhood and bring a car lot. We already have everything we need over there and y’all are pushing us more.”
Terrells concerns come from families living in the neighborhood with children outside playing and he thinks the car lot will be hazardous to their safety.
“I am in strict opposition of it and if I have to bring everybody that lives in that district up here next week, I will.”
Guthrie says for as long as he can remember the property has always been a car lot and the rezoning of this property would bring nothing different besides the erection of a new building if his property achieves in being rezoned.
