TIFTON — The coldest week of the young 2022 is in the air, but for one sport Wednesday evening, it’s a fresh air.
Tift County’s soccer teams will scrimmage Lee County Wednesday in Tifton. The Lady Devils match will start at 5:30 p.m., with the boys to follow.
The scrimmages were originally scheduled for Thursday, but Blue Devils head coach Bobby Earls announced they were being moved up by a day. There is a 77% change of rain for Thursday afternoon, according to weather reports.
Earls’ team will be trying to build on one of the greatest years in team history. The Blue Devils went 15-2 in 2021, winning Region 1-7A with a 6-0 record. Five of the region games ended in shutouts and only three times did the squad allow more than two goals. They advanced to the Sweet 16 of the state tournament before being eliminated by Harrison.
The Lady Devils went 2-4 in region and also made the state tournament. Their season is a quick turnaround for head coach Zac Martin. Saturday, he coached the middle school wrestling team to a state championship.
