MACON — There were only three Tift County wrestlers at the Class 7A traditional tournament, but those three in singlets definitely made an impact.
Timothy Wright, Dalton Hancock and Sergio Martinez were the only three Blue Devils to qualify for the championships, which were held Friday and Saturday. All three won at least once in loaded, 12-man fields.
As expected, Camden County won the state traditional title, finishing with 200 points. Tift’s Region 1-7A mates did quite well for themselves at the tournament. Colquitt County was second at 122 points, with Lowndes fifth at 82. The Blue Devils scored 21.5 points for 20th place. Six of the 14 individual state champions hailed from Camden or Colquitt.
Hancock won his first two matches at 220 pounds, according to Track Wrestling. That put him in the final four of the main bracket. He fell there to Zion Rutledge of Hillgrove, whose record showed a mere two losses on the season. Hancock was pinned in the second period and Rutledge went on to win the state title.
That sent him to the consolation bracket where he fell by pin to Lowndes’ Grant Laskey, Hancock ultimately tied for 5th in the tournament with Cosby Ellis of East Coweta.
Hancock faced off against a two-loss wrestler. Martinez’s draw was possibly even tougher.
At 113 pounds, Martinez won his first match by pin before running into Reed Walker of West Forsyth, whose record was listed as 49-1. Walker defeated Martinez, then continued his run all the way to a state title, defeating Hunter McCullough of Lowndes. Martinez was the only wrestler to score at state against Walker.
After the Walker loss, Martinez won in the consolation bracket before his tournament ended in the next round.
Wright, who has suffered bad injury luck all year, found more of it in Macon. He won a 10-9 match in the first round, then was defeated in the second. An injury ended his high school career in the consolation bracket.
