TIFTON — Fiesta del Pueblo committee is seeking to support the education of one of Tifton’s rising stars.

The Fiesta del Pueblo committee recently awarded Dianna Huerta of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College with the 2022 Maria Guadalupe Cervantes Memorial Scholarship, providing her with funds that will help support her education and beyond.

The MGC scholarship began in 2004. It honors the titular educator who worked diligently in Mexico but was unable to work as a teacher in the United States. The scholarship is annually granted to an ABAC student by the Fiesta del Pueblo committee.

Huerta, currently a sophomore at ABAC studying early childhood education, said the funding is a lifeline for her own education.

“I was actually so worried about, financially, how I was going to afford school and then I got the help from the Cervantes family,” Huerta said. “I was like, ‘Oh, that’s amazing, now I can just continue pursuing exactly what I wanted with education and help students later on.'”

Huerta said she plans to graduate from ABAC with an associates degree, then continue her education at Georgia Southwestern State University with the intent of obtaining a master’s degree.

The Fiesta del Pueblo is scheduled for 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Sept. 24. For more information, contact Dina Willis at (229) 386-0354, Nancy Carrera at (229) 520-7467, or visit www.fiestadelpueblo.org.
