- Tifton Mayor Julie Smith wants to create a Mayor’s Reading Club for youths.
TIFTON — The mayor is looking to start a new program for the city – one that involves helping educate children on the functions of municipal government.
Mayor Julie Smith expressed her interest in starting a Mayor’s Reading Club program in Tifton during the Sept. 19 Tifton City Council meeting, explaining she had taken part in a similar program in Savannah as part of an event with the Georgia Municipal Association.
Smith said GMA had been working with local authors to write a series of books relating to governmental processes at a municipal level, with the intent of teaching children about city governments through stories. The reading club would create a similar process.
Smith expressed her eagerness to start the initiative, saying she read to students of Tiftarea Academy the previous week.
She reported the program is still in development but informed council members that she would be interested in having them read as well.
