TIFTON — A recent federal grant will see massive renovation in several rural Georgia airports, including Tifton’s own Henry Tift Myers Airport.

U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff announced a grant of $3.4 million will go toward investment in 13 airports in Georgia’s smaller or rural communities, among them Tifton.

Made possible through the senators’ bipartisan infrastructure law, the funding will be managed by the Georgia Department of Transportation, which will distribute the funding to airports requiring improvement or renovation as needed.

In addition to Henry Tift Myers, facilities such as Fitzgerald Municipal Airport, Bacon County Airport and Daniel Field Airport are earmarked to receive funding, too.

The Tifton airport will be receiving $301,760, which the Tift County Airport Authority has stated will be directed toward the construction and installation of an above-ground Jet A fuel tank and fuel containment system, as well as the removal of the current underground tank.

The funding will not be able to cover the full cost of the project; the remaining $360,510 will be taken from funding from GDoT, entitlement grant funds from the Federal Aviation Administration and local funding.
