TIFTON — Tifton City Council voted to raise the city’s natural gas rates by 75 cents.

After discussing how best to remedy the declining city gas fund throughout June, council unanimously agreed to increase the city rate July 17 by the highest amount discussed.

The city weighed recommendations to boost the rate by either 20, 50 or 75 cents, with City Manager Emily Beeman ultimately recommending the increase of 75 cents.

Beeman said the city had capital projects planned for this year, amounting to $855,000 in costs, as well as worn-down gas lines that need updating, which the gas fund would be able to provide following the increase.

She projected the city would see a net revenue of $300,000 for the year as a result of the change.

The rate increase is expected to only affect the city’s commercial customers receiving the industrial, firm industrial and agricultural rates, meaning the rates of residents will not be affected.

The city’s arrangements with UPS or the City of Nashville will be unaffected as well, as they are existing agreements.
