TIFTON — The City of Tifton has plans to make use of a new workforce housing grant created by Georgia’s governor.

At the conclusion of the Oct. 2 city council meeting, city manager Emily Beeman reported to the city council members that Gov. Brian Kemp had set aside $35 million for use in a workforce housing initiative grant, and that she was looking into ways to take advantage of the funding.

Beeman explained that the grant would be put toward infrastructure for affordable housing for the city’s workforce, and that they had already been approached by several developers and contractors interested in utilizing the grant funding.

She reported that she had worked with planning and zoning director Crystal Gaillard to submit a Request for Project Sep. 29, so as to fairly determine a suitable contractor, and that all contractors in the community that would be interested had been notified.

This RFP will be kept active until 2 p.m. Oct. 26.
