Only a few laps to go for Brynna Burke during her win in the 500 freestyle.

TIFTON — Fifteen Tift County Swim Devils are set to compete in the state meet Friday, Feb. 9 at Georgia Tech.

The best case scenario for Tift is to be in Atlanta all day.

Preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. and, if anyone, can make the finals, those start at 6 p.m. Last year, the Swim Devils participated in seven finals.

Five relay teams qualified for state, three of them girls teams. Brynna Burke, Brianna Domagala, Anna Lupo and Kendall Sasser will be together for the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. The group for the 200 medley relay are Abby Lupo, Raegin Walker, Raylee Walker and Ava Wilson.

The boys relay teams are the 200 and 400 freestyle. The 400 freestyle consists of Karson Ponder, Brayden Rowland, Ethan Stalnaker and Chase Walker. In the 200 are Rocky Faw, Landon Parrish, Ponder and Aiden Thrasher.

All of the girls relay teams were finalists in 2023, with Sasser, Burke, Wilson, Anna Lupo, Raylee Walker, Raegin Walker and Domagala being parts of those groups.

Four swimmers will be in four events each, including their relay teams.

Burke is additionally swimming in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle; Domagala is in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly; Anna Lupo vies in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and Sasser competes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Burke was a 2023 finalist in the 500 freestyle and Lupo made the final round in the butterfly last year.

Wilson will swim in three events, individually in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Ponder has two events, both being relays.

Rachel Spurlin is an alternate in the 400 freestyle relay.

The 200 girls medley relay team has the 14th best time of all Class 6A qualifiers, according to official entries. Their cut was in 1:57, 12 seconds off that of Lassiter. The 200 freestyle girls team is 13th among qualifiers in 1:47, 10 seconds off first.

Anna Lupo’s time in the 100 butterfly is 11th fastest, a mere three seconds off that of Kate Bradley of — surprise — Lassiter.

Tift swept its region meet for the 10th year in a row in January. The Swim Devils have more state entries that its 1-6A opponents. Lee is taking six swimmers to Atlanta, with Veterans at seven, Houston County at five and Thomas County Central with nine. Northside will have no representatives at state.
