Tift County tennis earns big wins over Houston County

TIFTON — Tift County tennis finished up its week with big wins over Houston County on Thursday in region play and over Class A powerhouse Irwin County on Friday.

The Blue Devils won all five matches against Houston’s Bears, needing only 11 sets to win over Region 1-6A’s No. 2 team.

Maitrey Patel won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, with Joshua Hellman victorious at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Elijah Hellman had to go to a third set in his win, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

In doubles, Tyson Lasseter and Matthew Layfield earned a 6-2, 6-2 win and Seth Denham and Ross Peters won, 6-2, 6-4.

The Lady Devils edged Houston, 3-2. Every single victory versus the Lady Bears was hard-earned.

Kenyaria Morrow and Maddison Garner won at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, 7-6. At No. 2 singles, Anna Lupo was nearly as close, 6-4, 7-5. Abby Lupo had a 7-1 tiebreaker for her first set win, then earned the second 6-3.

Riley Griffin fell at No. 1 singles, as did Perrin Turner and Kate Carpenter at No. 1 doubles. Griffin had won her first set, 6-4.

Tift’s boys breezed against Irwin County Friday at home. The boys dropped only two games in their 5-0 score.

Both doubles teams — Denham and Peters and Lasseter and Layfield — won, 6-0, 6-0. That was also the score for Patel.

Joshua Hellman’s scores were 6-1, 6-0 and Elijah Hellman’s were 6-0, 6-1.

The Lady Devils pulled out another 3-2 win.

It was the Lupos win two wins at singles, 6-0, 6-0 for Abby Lupo and 6-2, 6-4 for Anna Lupo. Garner and Morrow won in doubles, 7-5, 6-3.

Irwin won a singles and a doubles match.

Tennis traveled to Northside of Warner Robins Tuesday, with home matches March 14 against Thomas County Central.
