Tift County tennis teams No. 1 going into region tournament

TIFTON — Tift County’s Blue Devils completed their Region 1-6A tennis schedule with a spotless 10-0 record Thursday, wrapping it up with a 5-0 win over Thomas County Central.

They will be the No. 1 seed going into the upcoming region tournament, as will the Lady Devils after their win over TCC, 4-1. Tift’s girls are 9-1 in region play.

All teams have completed their 1-6A schedules. Lee’s girls are No. 2 at 8-2, with Houston County third at 6-4. The boys side of the ledger has Houston second and Lee third. Houston is 8-2 and Lee is 6-4.

Tift swept all boys sets against the Jackets. Joshua Hellman and Elijah Hellman won 6-0, 6-0 in singles matches as did Ross Peters and Seth Denham in doubles.

Maitrey Patel earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory and Matthew Layfield and Tyson Lasseter won, 6-1, 6-1.

Riley Griffin won at No. 1 singles for the Lady Devils, 6-2, 6-1. Anna Lupo needed a 10-8 tiebreaker to win her first set, then cruised in the second 6-1,. Abby Lupo made it a singles sweep, 6-4, 6-2.

Kenyaria Morrow and Madison Garner were victorious, 6-3, 6-1. Kate Carpenter and Perrin Turner fell in singles.

One day earlier, Tift teams traveled to Lowndes. The Blue Devils kept the good times rolling with a 4-1 win, but the Vikettes won all five of their matches.

Layfield and Lasseter won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and Denham and Peters nearly did the same at No. 2, with sets of 6-0, 6-1.

The Hellman brothers won singles matches. Elijah Hellman’s win was by 6-2, 6-1. Joshua Hellman won a 10-2 tiebreaker after splitting his first two sets, 6-4, 3-6.

Next up is the Region 1-6A tennis tournament, set to begin March 18 at Lee County.
