TIFTON — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s softball team won two big games from invading South Georgia State Saturday to stay in second place in the GCAA standings.

The Fillies won 9-4 and 8-1 to increase their conference mark to 6-4 (19-11 overall). They can pull even in victories with Georgia Military College — if only temporarily — with a Tuesday sweep at home over Andrew College.

Neither GMC nor Gordon State, who also has six GCAA wins, won’t play again until later in the week.

ABAC’s first game with South Georgia State was a nail-biter until an explosion in the late innings. SGSC had a 3-2 lead after one frame, until Laney McGee drove in Trinity Odom in the 5th to tie.

After that, the dam burst for the Fillies, with six more scoring in the 6th.

Alli Eidson led off the 6th with a homer for a 4-3 lead. Elli Bryan stepped up after two singles and delivered another to bring in Dylana Barton.

Odom drove in Ashley Archibald and the hits kept coming. McGee doubled in a pair of runs and Carter Gore singled to bring the score to 9-3. South Georgia State scored in the 7th, but it was too late.

McGee had three hits and three RBIs in the win. Archibald and Odom had two hits apiece. Kaylee Barrett with 6.1 innings in the circle to earn the win.

The Hawks scored first in the rematch, but it was all ABAC after. Three runs crossed in the first and four more in another big 6th.

McGee, Archibald and Eidson all homered. Eidson was the first, a three-run shot in the 1st that plated McGee and Gore. Archibald launched a solo homer in the 4th before McGee thundered in two in the 6th. Lexi Metts delivered the other RBI, a double that scored Bryan.

Jaci Smiley gave up a single unearned run in a complete game. SGSC only mustered four hits against her.

Gore leads the GCAA with a .413 average and is tied for first with 28 RBIs. Archibald’s homerun gives her seven for the year, tied for second in the GCAA.
