TIFTON — Recent heavy rain has resulted in a pair of sewage spills in Tifton.
Thomas Coker, operations supervisor of ESG Operations, a utility service that manages Tifton’s water and sewage systems, reported that the excessive rainfall earlier this week caused manholes on 809 East Golden Road and 2406 North Ridge Avenue to overflow and spill the morning of April 11.

Both spills began at 8:30 a.m., with the spillage on North Ridge Avenue stopping at around 5 p.m. after approximately 7,000 gallons had been spilled. Coker noted that a clogged pump at the 26th and Ridge lift station had contributed to the spill’s occurrence.
The East Golden Road spill, however, displaced over 40,400 gallons of sewage before stopping around 2 a.m. the following day.
Coker stated that the sewage from both spills had passed through the city’s storm drainage system, with the spillage from Golden Road going to the Little River Basin and the spillage from Ridge Avenue going to the New River. Additionally, ESG plans to spread hydrated lime on, as well as clean, the affected locations.
