MCKINNEY, Texas —Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College saw a quarterfinals run in two flights last week at the NJCAA women’s tennis nationals at Collin College.

Victoria Conde Verdrell and Kitti Nemeth made it to the quarterfinals in Flight 1 doubles. The duo did not get up a game in their first match, then won in nearly as easy fashion in the second round, 6-1, 6-2. Their run ended in the quarterfinals against a No. 4 seed from Cowley College.

Conde Vendrell also had a nice individual tournament, making it to the quarterfinals of Flight 2 before running into the No. 1 seed in Arina Babenko and eventual national champion from Cowley. She won her first two rounds in straight sets.

Nemeth was spotless in her first match in Flight 1 with consecutive set victories of 6-0, 6-0. She then almost pulled an upset in the second round, taking St. Petersburg College’s Isabella Mercante to three sets before falling. Mercante was the No. 4 seed.

Emily Moon won a match in Flight 3, also running into a ranked competitor in the second round.

ABAC did not enter three of the singles flights.

Cowley won nationals with 50 points, winning six of nine overall flights. Though their entries were limited, ABAC scored 10 points to tie for 18th.
