PLANO, Tex. — Head coach Matt Rogel’s first ever Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College men’s tennis team finished with a No. 9 ranking at the NJCAA men’s national tournament, which wrapped last week at Collin College.

According to official results, the Stallions scored 20 points for the tournament, edging USC Sumter for ninth place.

Three Stallions reached the quarterfinals in singles matches, as did one doubles team.

Antonin Leborne reached the quarterfinals in Flight 1, winning his first two matches in straight sets. Antoine Schaub also made the quarters in Flight 4, winning a quick 6-0, 6-1 match, then coming back from a set deficit to win over Franco Vedda in three. There, Schaub ran into eventual runner-up Tomas Quesada Perez, the No. 1 seed.

Benjamin Ranby-Al had an even easier time in the first round of Flight 6 with straight sets of 6-0, then breezed through the next round, 6-4, 6-1. His opponent, Alejandro Gonzalez, was also runner-up in his flight.

ABAC almost had at least another quarterfinal in Flight 3. Zachary Riley split sets with Emmanuel Jebutu before having to retire in the third set.

It was similar bad luck for Petar Wemmenhove, who made it to the consolation quarters in Flight 2 before retiring.

In Flight 5, Matthew Rodgers came away with one singles victory at nationals.

Schaub and Wemmenhove got all the way to the consolation semifinals, but were unable to continue. After dropping their first match in the main bracket, they won in consolation, 8-5, then had a bye to the semis.

Riley and Leborne made the quarters with a comeback effort of their own. After a tight first round, they fell in the first set of their second match. Nail-biting sets of 6-4, 7-6 (3) followed for them to advance.

Rodgers combined with Ranby-Al to win their first match in Flight 3 of doubles.
