TIFTON — The future is looking pretty good for the Tift County Lady Devils softball team. Tuesday saw them walk off a 4-3 scrimmage win over Thomas County Central, featuring outstanding performances from all three pitchers.

Riley Williams’ grounder drove in Stella Bryant in the bottom of the seventh. Bryant reached with a lead-off walk. Ella Bruce was hit by a pitch. Pressure increased on the Lady Jackets when a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position with no outs.

“We did very well on situational hitting,” said head coach Jen Walls. “Small ball, baserunning.”

Cora Beth McCrary earned the win in the circle. Starter Lily Robinson threw four innings and Hannah Grace Murphy threw two.

Robinson fanned five. The three combined to allow a mere four hits and only one of Thomas County Central’s runs were earned.

Lady Devils hitters only recorded a couple of hits but made the most out of it with small ball.

Brayiin Dorden walked to start the bottom of the second. Aubree Hale took over on the basepaths as her courtesy runner, going to second as Morgan Brey reached on an error.

Marlee Veazey singled on a perfect bunt, Hale scoring when a throw went awry. McCrary drew another error on a slow infield grounder, plating both Brey and Veazey.

Thomas County Central scored its first two runs in the fourth on miscues. Tift’s defense countered that with big plays.

The visitors loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but went to the dugout with nothing to show for it after Brey ran down a fly ball at the wall in left field.

Lyla Moore also held on for a force out at second despite being upended on a slide.

Besides Veazey’s bunt single, Williams had a base hit in the first frame.

Walls praised Tift’s new players for how well they did in the scrimmage. The Lady Devils have no seniors this year and a number of freshmen contributed Tuesday. Walls said it was their practices paying off.

“They’re looking really s solid,” she said.

Assistant Ivey Vickers handed Walls a game ball in honor of her first victory as Tift head coach. She’ll have the chance to earn another Tuesday, Aug. 6 when the Lady Devils open the regular season at home with a doubleheader against Cairo.
