TIFTON — Tift County’s Lady Devils avenged an early-season loss Wednesday against Lee County. And they not only won, but did so in dominating fashion, walking off an 8-0 run-rule contest.

Lee had won 4-3 last month. Tift won’t get a chance to avenge the other loss, which was 2-1 to Class A Div. 2 No. 1 Lanier County.

Head coach Jen Walls said the team — which has no seniors — has grown “a lot” from the start of the season. “They’re doing phenomenal,” she said. Walls said they executed perfectly Wednesday what they had practiced Tuesday.

The Lady Devils had bad at least one hit in every inning. Unlike in many of their games, they led from the start with three runs in the first inning.

Riley Williams started it off with a single under the third baseman’s glove. Morgan Brey sacrificed her to second before Lily Robinson singled to right, allowing Williams to score standing.

The inning was only getting started. Marlee Veazey had a base hit to left and, with two outs, Braylin Dorden earned a walk to load the bases for Hannah Grace Murphy. Murphy came through with a single down the third base line, plating two runs.

Tift’s 3-0 lead held through the middle innings, though they continued to keep Lee under pressure.

Brey scorched a double in the second. Ella Bruce and Williams were on in the third and fourth, respectively.

None scored, but Tift was never anxious. Robinson was dealing in the circle.

Lee had Christina Benton and McKenzie Davis on in the first with one down, but back-to-back Robinson strikeouts ended the inning. Davis’ single was the Lady Trojans’ only hit until a bunt single in the fifth.

Tift’s bats began heating up again in the bottom of the fifth.

Robinson led off with a walk and Veazey blooped a single. With two outs, Kinsley Tawzer boomed a double to left for the squad’s fourth run.

“Kinsley Tawzer has been amazing,” Walls said. Tawzer had two hits last week against Lowndes.

Benton reached on a sixth inning single and was stranded at third as Robinson didn’t allow a ball out of the infield. They wouldn’t get another crack at scoring.

Stella Bryant, batting right instead of her usual left-handed slap hitter stance, got a single to begin the sixth. Though Bryant was thrown out at third on a close call trying to steal third, Tift was now red hot.

Williams singled to center and Brey sent another rocket to the hot corner, doubling off the third baseman’s glove. An infield error brought home Williams.

Veazey tripled to right, bringing in Brey and Jenna Gill (running for Robinson) to bring the score to 7-0. Lee got the second out, but Tawzer hit another rope to third for Veazey to hit the run-rule differential of eight.

Robinson held Lee to four hits while striking out nine. During one stretch, she retired 12 consecutive hitters.

Meanwhile, the Lady Devils were 16-of-30 as a team at the plate.

Williams and Veazey had three hits apiece. Brey, Robinson, Tawzer and Murphy had two each.

Four Tift players each drove in two runs: Murphy, Tawzer, Veazey and Robinson.

Now 9-3, Tift County will play in Columbus this weekend versus Northgate and Haralson County. Walls said she hoped to get more time on the field for several players, especially in the circle. Robinson has been the team’s primary pitcher. Both C.B. McCrary and Murphy have lots of experience in the circle.
