- Marlee Veazey catches a short pop fly in the second inning. Lady Devils infielders were busy Tuesday with nine putouts, three by Veazey. Outfielders had a quiet day as Camden County hit only one pitch out of the infield.
TIFTON — Lily Robinson had a 2-2 count with two outs in the top of the 7th. Tift County was clinging to a 1-0 lead when head coach Jen Walls called time and brought her infield together.
Walls said after the game her message was a simple one: That she loved the Lady Devils. And to win the game.
The reaction was all smiles and Robinson needed only one more pitch. Kinsley Tawzer knocked down a sharp grounder to first, picked it up, then beat the Camden County batter to the bag for the third and final out.
Tuesday’s series opener was arguably Robinson’s best game of the season. Though Robinson no-hit Forsyth Central to open the year, this was a bigger stage for Robinson, pitching in a tight Region 1-6A contest.
A single run in the second frame was the difference in the score.
Braylin Dorden started off that inning with a double to deep left. Lyla Moore took over there as her courtesy runner.
Morgan Brey advanced Moore on a sac bunt that turned into an error on the throw.
Camden’s Olivia Douglas recorded a strikeout and then got a grounder back to her from Hannah Grace Murphy. However, the throw over to first was just enough of an opening for Moore who slid under a tag at the plate to score.
And that lone run was the only change in the scoreboard all afternoon.
Tift had the bases loaded in the first with two outs. Robinson and Tawzer occupied second and third in the third, again with two down. The Lady Devils only had one other threat, when Robinson was thrown out at third trying to get two bases out of an Ella Bruce single.
Walls wanted insurance runs, but the visitors stood firm.
Though Tift had few chances to score, the Lady Wildcats had even less.
Robinson had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings before a single up the middle by Lexie Poole. Until the sixth, Camden had but one baserunner at all, Cadence Williams being hit by a pitch in the third.
Addison Spencer began the seventh with a free pass. Robinson got an infield pop to Marlee Veazey at shortstop before Moore ruined the no-no. That didn’t bother the Lady Devils, who nearly ended the game with a double play on a grounder to Veazey. They only got one, though, setting up the final speech and play by Tawzer.
Not only did Robinson finish with a one-hitter, the single was the only ball hit out of the infield.
Eleven of the 21 outs were Robinson strikeouts. Of the other 10, three putouts were by Bruce at third and three by Veazey at short. Robinson, Tawzer and Dorden had one each and Camden bunted a ball foul with two strikes.
At the plate, Robinson went 2-for-3 with a double. Tift had five hits total.
Around the region Tuesday, Lowndes handed Colquitt County its first loss of the 1-6A campaign, 2-0. The two are scheduled for a doubleheader Wednesday in Moultrie. Tift will be at Camden Wednesday to finish the series.
