TIFTON — County commissioners are considering a means of honoring the linemen and first responders that rose to action following Hurricane Helene.
At Tuesday’s county commission meeting, county manager Jim Carter praised county staff’s efforts to clean up and recover from the devastation caused by the recent storm, which prompted county commissioners to discuss the potential need to recognize the dedication of the workers who had responded so swiftly to the crisis.
During his closing comments, Carter expressed his appreciation and pride for the county public works department, stressing that they had been hard at work out on the roads even as the hurricane was coming into the county, and were back out working almost as soon as the winds had died down. Since then, he reported that they’d succeeded in clearing all but four roads in the county.
Voicing his agreement, District 4 commissioner Stan Stalnaker proposed that the county organize some form of recognition for the linemen and first responders once the county had better recovered from the damage left by Helene.
District 6 commissioner Greg Wood seconded the notion, reporting that since the storm he had not received any calls regarding recovery efforts in his district not being completed in a timely manner.
Board chair Tony McBrayer also offered praise to the county’s public works director Jason Jordan, citing his initiative and forethought in ordering a supply of road pipe ahead of the hurricane knowing it would be in high demand following it.
