TIFTON — Residents of Tifton will be able to sample a unique and colorful display of quilting in the latest exhibit from Plough Gallery.
The works of textile and fiber artist Malka Dubrowsky opened at the gallery this past weekend as the exhibit “Square the Circle,” a showcase of the artist’s mix of traditional stylings and modern design, captured in fabric form.
Focusing on vibrant colors and striking patterns, Dubrowsky’s work involves a great deal of experimentation as these colors and patterns are applied to blank white fabric and identified, cut and combined in new ways, then often recut and reassembled time and again until the perfect combination comes together.
“There’s so many ways to put color and patterns on fabric,” Dubrowsky said. “What I found worked best for me was to make a lot of stuff–a lot of patterns, a lot of colors, have them come together and then maybe even start piecing a few things, then unpiecing them.”
While this idea can certainly be seen through the pieces in the exhibit, guests can also what led to the creation of these works through an accompanying assortment of scraps and fabrics also on display in the exhibit hall, meant to visualize Dubrowsky’s creative process of experimentation.
In celebration of the exhibit’s opening, Plough hosted a reception the evening of Oct. 26, welcoming the artist and her works to the gallery and inviting local community members and arts aficionados to browse the pieces on display and meet with Dubrowsky herself.
During this reception, the artist thanked the gallery for hosting her work and spoke on her exhibit, her creative process and motivations, and the steps she’s taken through her artistic journey that led her to the work she now has on display.
“As an artist, and for those of you who make art, the ability to see all your stuff altogether–as opposed to one piece here, one piece there, something stacked up over here so your cats don’t mess it up–it’s been really nice,” Dubrowsky said. “Seeing the show together has just been so terrific for me.”
A handful of the gallery’s patrons that night also walked away with a gift of their own, as anyone who stopped by Plough for the reception was given a chance to win one of a set of pottery pieces made by Mark Errol, co-owner of the gallery, via a raffle.
The works of “Square the Circle” will be on display until Dec. 31. All of the pieces have been made available for purchase. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, contact Plough Gallery at (229)396-4200
