TIFTON — With winter on its way, local residents looking to keep warm can certainly find a helping hand in the Keep ’em Warm coat drive.
The annual clothing drive started up Nov. 6, inviting members of the community to donate their coats, scarves, and other warm clothing to kids in the Tiftarea who might need a little extra protection against the cold over the next few months.
Residents interested in donating to the drive can drop off their warm clothing at either one of the Kelly’s Cleaners locations, a longtime contributor to the program, or by bringing them to the second floor of the Charles Kent Administration Building
Now in its sixteenth year of activity, the drive was created by county commissioner Melissa Hughes, who noted a lack of warmer wear among youths across the Tiftarea during the winter season.
Since then, Hughes has experienced year after year of support from the community, both from donors turning in their cozy clothing and sponsors hoping to lend a helping hand. Indeed, she has expressed that it feels almost like each year has seen new volunteers and sponsors want to throw their hat in the ring to help out.
“I am so thankful we live in such a giving community that is willing to help our young people,” Hughes said.
This year’s drive is no different, being backed by local organization Friends of Tifton United and the upstate church Greater Deliverance New Baptist Church of Atlanta, both of whom have donated coats and other warm clothing to the drive’s cause.
The coat drive will be active and accepting donations until Dec. 13. For more information, questions, or offers to donate, Hughes has assured residents can contact her at (229)326-0241.
