TIFTON — City council has approved a revision to their City Code regarding dangerous driving in the hopes of promoting safe motor transit in Tifton.

Upon request from city police chief Steve Hyman, council members introduced new policies in the City Code aimed at preventing reckless driving at intersections and ensuring pedestrians were kept safe at their Nov. 18 meeting.

At the previous city council meeting, Hyman noted that he had received several reports of drivers around the city taking detours through parking lots when faced with a red light at an intersection, which posed a great threat to pedestrians walking through those areas and to drivers coming through the intersection as normal.

The revisions would mandate this manner of driving as punishable by citation, and have been structured in such a way as to cover other forms of reckless driving.
