TIFTON — Where the Fillies are finding their rhythm, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s Stallions head into the holidays on a streak they didn’t want after a 91-90 overtime loss to Paine College Saturday afternoon.

Matthew Mairena hit a corner three with less than a second to go in regulation to send the game to overtime at 77-77. Mairena’s shot had been a bit of a miracle considering a few seconds earlier.

Down five, 77-72, Bryce Wimberly was fouled while scoring on an inbounds play with 26 seconds left. He missed the free throw, setting up a wild scramble that was finally corralled by Tommie Hall. The Stallions dribbled around the perimeter before finally getting it to Mairena near the student section.

Matthew Mairena sends Saturday’s game to overtime with a last-second three.

Paine called time with four-tenths of a second left, but were unable to get a shot off as T.J. Smith knocked the inbounds pass away at midcourt.

ABAC controlled the overtime tip, but could only briefly control a lead.

Quinnton Jackson’s free throw gave the Lions a one-point lead. Hall scored five, including an and-one at 2:53, both times giving the Stallions single-point leads.

Each time, Paine responded. A scoop layup by Jocqua Keaton put the guests ahead 83-82 at 2:40, then Jackson beat the shot clock to expand that to three at 85-82.

Xavier Boyd made a pair from the stripe at 1:30 to get to a point differential again, but Kole Taylor made a three 15 seconds later. ABAC kept it at a possession deficit, courtesy of Mairena, but Paine beat the Stallions’ press with a Curtis Phillips basket.

Smith made two free throws with 15 seconds left, then ABAC caught a break when Taylor only made one free throw, keeping it 91-88 with 12 seconds remaining.

The Stallions missed a three, Smith rebounding in the paint. He got the board to go in with two seconds to go, but there wasn’t enough time to try to get Paine to the line again.

Paine built a 10-point lead over the first 6:15 of the game, going up 16-6 on a single free throw by Calvin Johnson. Boyd had a fantastic first half, especially over a four-minute period where he scored 12 points. The last of those cut the Lions’ advantage to 28-27.

Paine College’s Jocqua Keaton gets up close and personal in the paint with ABAC’s Bryce Wimberly.

Wimberly tied it at 30 on an old-fashioned three-point play at 4:21, then gave the Stallions their first lead (32-21) on an offensive rebound. Mairena assisted Boyd with four seconds left in the half for a 39-36 ABAC lead.

The Stallions began the second half well on a Mairena bucket, then fell behind 50-45 on a Paine run.

Hall squared it at 50 each, then ABAC had a good streak of its own, building the lead to 59-53 at 9:56. Six of the points were from Smith and Boyd buried a three.

Paine went back ahead on a Keaton basket, expanding it to their own-six point at 7:14, again by Keaton.

There was another tie at 67-all on Hall’s bucket. The score stayed close for another four minutes, neither up by more than two before the Lions threatened to run away with it in regulation.

Keaton went coast to coast at 1:20 for a 73-69 Paine lead, which expanded to 75-70 with 48 ticks left on Johnson free throws.

Hall came through on a drive with 43 seconds to go, but Johnson got it back up to five points nine seconds later before ABAC rallied to send the game into extras.

Boyd’s 17 led the Stallions, with Wimberly, Hall and Smith all at 15 points. Mairena scored 13. Smith and Hall had eight rebounds apiece and Smith blocked two shots.

ABAC shot 54% from the field at 37-68, but couldn’t pull out a win despite Paine’s 45%.

Johnson’s 25 was tops for the Lions, with 17 points coming from Jackson and 14 from Keaton.

ABAC travels to Paine Dec. 3 before hosting the College of Coastal Georgia Dec. 7.
