ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor broke Tiftarea Academy’s hearts Friday night, a 48-47 boys basketball decision that swept a varsity doubleheader.

With the score tied at 47-all, Knight Mason Johnson lifted a heave from 3-4 of the length of the floor. He was fouled on the shot, going to the free throw line with 0:00.6 showing on the clock.

Johnson made only one of three attempts, but it was enough to carry Deerfield-Windsor, now 15-1 after a Saturday victory over John Milledge.

The loss was Tiftarea’s second of the year. The Panthers led 15-8 after a quarter, but lost the lead in the second period. Though there were many ties, they only once regained it.

Elijah Smith had another massive game for TA with 27 of their 47 points. Smith had 11 in the first quarter alone and, for the second straight game, he was the Panthers’ sole scorer in a quarter, all four in the second.

Down 33-32 after three, consecutive baskets by Andrew Connell and J.R. Walker had Tiftarea in the lead 36-35. Once Deerfield went back up at 38-36, the Panthers forced five more ties, the last on a Walker steal and layup with 45 seconds left.

Walker scored 12 to go along with Smith’s 27.

LADY KNIGHTS 43, TIFTAREA 35

The Tiftarea five gave another team fits Friday. Coming off their mercy rule win over Valwood, the Lady Panthers held leads against powerful Deerfield-Windsor in each of the first three periods.

A Madi Shoultz trey in the fourth closed Deerfield’s lead to 32-31, but the opposing depth was too much. They kept within striking distance on Shoultz and Lexi Connell free throws and were down six, 41-35, when Kate Phillips hit both from the stripe with 50 seconds to go.

Makenna Grace Graham had the Lady Panthers up 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. They built on that in the second. After the Lady Knights went ahead 18-15, Shoultz tied with with a three-pointer before Kate Coogle scored on an inbounds play.

Coogle scored six straight for TA as they went ahead 24-18 with 20 seconds left, the last bucket on a pass the length of the floor by Connell. It was 24-20 at the half.

Shoultz scored 10, with Phillips and Coogle each at 9 points.
