TIFTON — Tiftarea Academy and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College have announced school closures for Wednesday. Both, as well as Tift County, will release early Tuesday ahead of the projected winter weather system moving through the neighborhood.

Tift will make a decision about school attendance Wednesday on Tuesday, according to an update on social media. “We will continue to monitor the weather as well as road conditions to inform our decisions regarding school on Wednesday,” Tift Schools said in a statement.

Snow, extremely rare for southern Georgia, is expected to fall on Tuesday afternoon, possibly as much as one inch.

Tiftarea will be the first to close Tuesday, doing so at noon.

“Given the large geographic area we serve,” said Tiftarea on Facebook, “we understand that families may need to make additional weather-related decisions, and any such absences will be considered excused.”

ABAC is to close at 2 p.m. Tift will have two dismissal times. Elementary students will dismiss at 1:45 p.m., with middle and high school students dismissing at 2:30 p.m.

“The hour early dismissal ensures all students, staff and drivers can be off the roads before the freezing temperatures occur,” said Tift Schools.

All expect to be back in session on Thursday.

Around the area, Berrien, Cook, Turner and Worth county school systems will be closed on Wednesday. Worth will be closed Tuesday as well. Berrien and Cook are in session Tuesday but will dismiss students at 2 p.m..

Ben Hill County and Irwin County  have not yet made a decision on their schools for Wednesday, but will be on a regular schedule Tuesday.

On Facebook, Turner County Schools said it is distributing meal kits to students Tuesday to take home with them.

Southern Regional Technical College had not announced plans for either day as of 4 p.m. Monday.
