Stallions’ comeback not quite enough against Toppers

TIFTON — Blue Mountain Christian left Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College feeling blue Saturday afternoon, winning both basketball games at Gressette Gymnasium.
Both teams will try to get back on track during a long road schedule. The Stallions head to Dalton State Thursday to take on the Roadrunners. Both men and women will be at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday. Neither squad will be back home until February.
The Golden Stallions dropped an 82-76 decision to the Topper. It’s been a particularly cruel 2025 for ABAC hoops teams in their inaugural four-year seasons. The Fillies dropped their eighth consecutive game — seventh in the Southern States Athletic Conference — in the 103-65 loss.
A big early deficit haunted ABAC’s men throughout. Kam Carter scored in the paint at 5:06 in the first half for a 40-17 Blue Mountain Christian lead.
ABAC outscored their visitors by 17 points the rest of the way, but never could get back out in front. They certainly tried, though.
Mike Williamson started the rally with a jumper at 4:44, setting off an 18-0 run over the next 4:07 to close to 40-35. During that stretch, Bryce Wimberly scored six points and Xavier Boyd and Matas Aidietis hit from beyond the arc.
Aidietis pulled down an offensive rebound and passed to Boyd to bring the score to 40-35.
BMC’s Jason Hunt scored the Toppers’ first points in nearly five minutes with a three-pointer. Matthew Mairena knocked down a jumper with two ticks to go and the Golden Stallions were down 43-37 at the half.
Hopes for building on that momentum were hampered when the Toppers scored the first two baskets of the second half, then built a 59-46 lead at 12:59.
ABAC rallied again. Mairena had the hot hand with 15 points in 20 minutes, including three treys. At 10:07, Mairena completed a personal 7-0 run pull to 61-55.
The visitors scored four, then Wimberly came through with two buckets. The score remained close for several more minutes before the Stallions were within an eyelash at 72-68 on a Nate Mobley post-up at 3:48.
ABAC had a chance to get even closer, but couldn’t get a shot to fall. One minute later Blue Mountain was ahead seven. Twice the Stallions cut to five again, courtesy of Mairena and Wimberly.
Vincent Douglas broke ABAC’s heart and ended their chances with a three-pointer to beat the shot clock with 44 seconds left and send the score to 80-72.
Mairena had 19 points for the Stallions, with Boyd close behind at 18, Wimberly with 16 and Mobley with 10.
Blue Mountain’s Hunt scored 33 points to lead that squad.
LADY TOPPERS 103, ABAC 65
The teams were tied at 18 after a quarter, but the next 10 minutes were the Fillies’ undoing Saturday. Blue Mountain outscored them 31-6 and the 49-24 lead was more than enough for the visitors to coast.
ABAC did have a piping hot fourth frame where they outscored the Lady Toppers, 31-30. Blue Mountain crossed the century mark with a three-pointer by Deja Prior with 50 seconds to go.
Shakiria Chaney and Dailey Jefferson combined for 42 of ABAC’s 65 points. Chaney scored 24 and had eight rebounds and four steals.
