TIFTON — The UGA Conference Center was the home of the annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show and Conference Jan. 16.

It was a full day of exhibits, seminars and conferences, with plenty going on inside and outside the building.

Lunchtime at the conference brought speeches, as well as recognition of awards winners.

The Media Award went to retired WALB anchor Jim Wallace. Fellow WALB anchor Karla Heath-Sands accepted for Wallace, who was unable to be in attendance.

Dr. Tim Brenneman of the University of Georgia’s Peanut Disease Management, won for Research and Education. The Outstanding Young Peanut Farmer went to Ryan Ireland of Turner County.

The Distinguished Service winner was T.E. Moye Jr., Baker County resident, and President of Georgia Federal State Inspection Service.

Martine Phillips, Billy Senkbeil, Daniel L. Johnson, Wayne Peavy and Sauls Partnership were the district winners for Outstanding Georgia Peanut Farmers of the Year. They were celebrated at the breakfast that morning.

Speeches included Don Koehler, executive director of the Georgia Peanut Commission; Dena Malsom of the National Peanut Board; and Bob Redding.

Melsom talked about how peanuts were being marketed for the next generation. Both Koehler and Redding had comments on the government side of the business.
