TIFTON — Lowndes swept a Region 1-6A soccer doubleheader from Tift County Tuesday night, winning a pair of games by 6-2 scores.
Lowndes scored first, a Ronan Robinson goal 12 minutes in. This lead lasted nine minutes as Tift picked up the pressure. Brock Harden had a shot go wide early, but then cleaned up a rebound and blooped a goal at 19:08.
Braylon Samuel had a big series a few minutes later, sliding for a kick save, then quickly making another on a Vikings rebound header.
The wind, which had been blowing steadily all night, then became a factor. A Lowndes goal kick was caught in a blast, driving it even further and over the heads of already deep Blue Devils defenders. Joseph Rudolph caught up with this pass and made a short kick to score at 5:32, giving his team back the lead.
Lowndes added another goal at 5:11 by Judah Turner for a 3-1 halftime lead.
Jordan Lopez was saved on a shot 10 minutes into the second half, then Tift had a golden opportunity for Lopez get called back on offsides. It was Lopez, however, who got the Devils back in the game, scoring at 27:16 to make it a one-goal match again.
Unfortunately, they soon had to dig out of a hole again. A Zak Scott cross became a goal for Louis Beavers at 23:30. Samuel kept the score from going higher on a leaping tip save that saw the rebound bounce off the crossbar before going out of bounds.
Lowndes added two late goals by Scott for the final score. Lopez had a last-second attempt go wide for Tift.
In the earlier game, the Vikettes were up 4-1 at the half in their match. Jordyn Shivers scored for Tift.
Tift will host Colquitt County Friday in another big Region 1-6A showdown.
