Devils divide with Berrien on Senior Night

TIFTON — Tift County celebrated its tennis seniors Thursday as the regular season came to an end with a split against neighboring Berrien.

The Blue Devils needed less than an hour to win 5-0 over BHS, but Joci Holbrook’s efforts at No. 1 singles let the visitors slip by the Lady Devils, 3-2.

Tift seniors are Brooklyn Baird, Kate Carpenter, Madison Garner, Anna Lupo, Matthew Layfield, Kenyaria Morrow, Chase Nixon, Maitrey Patel, Ethan White and Kate Marie Womack. Baird and Nixon were not present for the postmatch celebration.

Devils doubles teams lost only one match between them.

White and Jack Medina won, 6-0, 6-0 while Layfield and Seth Denham had wins of 6-0, 6-1.

Elijah Hellman won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Maitrey Patel was a 6-1, 6-1 winner and Joshua Hellman won, 6-1, 6-3.

Morrow and Carpenter earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. Abby Lupo secured Tift’s other win, 6-3, 6-2 in singles.

Sutton Sheppard fell 3-6, 2-6 and Holbrook won over Griffin in the other singles match. Garner and Anna Lupo won their first set, 6-3, but Berrien came back with 6-3, 10-6 sets for the overall win.

The matches were the third in three days for TCHS, who get a bit of a respite with spring break next week, though the Region 1-6A tournament begins as well.

The Blue Devils continued their hot streak through Region 1-6A Tuesday with a 4-1 victory against Lowndes. Two singles and both doubles teams had match wins.

Adam Beck and Medina were down a set (2-6), but won two straight by 6-4 scores. Meanwhile, Denham and Layfield had a much easier time at 6-2, 6-0.

Patel grooved, 6-1, 6-1, as did Elijah Hellman, 6-0, 6-4. Joshua Hellman ran into a buzzsaw in Holden Walton and dropped a 2-6, 1-6 match.

The Vikettes won close, 3-2. No. 2 doubles went to a third set after Carpenter and Morrow divided 7-5 sets with Lowndes. The third ended in Lowndes’ favor, 6-2.

Wins came from Abby Lupo and Sheppard. Sheppard breezed, 6-0, 6-1 and Lupo was nearly as quick at 6-0, 6-3.

Griffin fell, 0-6, 3-6 as did Garner and Anna Lupo, 3-6, 1-6.

Wednesday, both Tift tennis teams won 5-0 over Cook.

In singles, Griffin had sets of 6-1, 6-2; Abby Lupo, 6-2, 6-2, and Sheppard, 6-2, 6-2. Anna Lupo and Garner won, 6-1, 6-4 and Carpenter and Morrow, 6-3, 6-2.

Cook’s boys won five sets total.

It was 6-0, 6-0 wins for Patel, plus for Layfield and Denham and Medina and Beck. Joshua Hellman’s sets were 6-1, 6-1 and Elijah Hellman 6-1, 6-2.
