TIFTON — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College softball barely needed an hour Saturday in winning the first game of a doubleheader over Faulkner, 2-1.

Faulkner found Tess Rollins’ pitches too hard to resist, swinging early in the count often. These quick at-bats most often resulted in pop-outs. The Eagles had 15 of those, compared to five groundouts, one strikeout and a mere four hits.

Rollins’ quick work buoyed the Fillies, who posted a run in the first and second frames and had a grand total of six singles themselves.

Ava Maxwell got the first inning going with a walk, going to second on a sac bunt by Laney McGee, then third on Alli Eidson’s hit.

Though Faulkner was able to catch Maxwell off third on an infield grounder by Emma Humphrey, Eidson scored on a single by Ava Roland.

One inning later, Kendall Fowler reached on an error, but was still at first with two down. Maxwell worked another walk to get Fowler into scoring position, then McGee came through with a hard hit up the middle to make it 2-0.

ABAC seemed poised to break it open in the third as Humphrey hit a lead-off single and stood at third on a single by Ashley Archibald. However, Archibald was caught stealing with two outs, ending the inning.

The Fillies mustered only one hit after that, Carter Gore’s single in the seventh. Gore was erased on a fielder’s choice. ABAC did not have a runner reach as far as second in their last three innings.

But what ABAC lacked in baserunners, they made up for with Rollins. Faulkner had two singles in the second, but left them stranded on an infield pop. The other two hits came in a row in the sixth.

Kelbi Johnson doubled to deep center with one down in the sixth, bringing in Anna Catherine Segrest. Johnson moved up on a fly to center and looked sure to score on a sharp grounder, but a spectacular backhanded Archibald pick at third became a simple groundout to end the threat.

Faulkner went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh.

FAULKNER 5, ABAC 1

ABAC scored first in the second game, Archibald working a bases-loaded walk, plating McGee.

The Eagles came back with a run in the third to tie, then added four more in the last three innings.

ABAC only had three hits, from McGee, Humphrey and Roland. Anna Hutchison and Addison Tyre combined in the circle.
