TIFTON — The City of Tifton is considering modifications to their alcohol ordinance, specifically pertaining to their catering policies.

City clerk and deputy city manager Jessica White proposed to the city council April 7 that a clearer outline and tighter limitations be applied to the city’s alcohol catering and special event permits so as to ensure they would be utilized correctly.

The amended policy would establish an annual limit for each organization, only allowing them to apply for one of these permits a maximum of six times each year.

White reported that the permits were meant to be temporary, one time uses, but recommended the policy changes as a means of dissuading attempts to circumvent going through the process of obtaining a full alcohol license.

City attorney Rob Wilmot also suggested a three-day cap could be applied to the policy, only allowing a business to apply for a temporary permit for use in events no longer than three days.

The city council will discuss and likely vote on the proposed amendments during their upcoming meeting later this month.
