TIFTON — The Tift County Schools Board of Education proudly awarded Dr. Carl Nichols a Beyond the T Award for his exceptional service and tireless work during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Board members presented the Tift County High School teacher with the award April 10 as thanks for his efforts in supporting both the ailing communities and the workers toiling away to restore order amid the swath of destruction left in the wake of the storm.

Chief information officer Dana Spurlin reported that Nichols had undertaken six disaster relief trips as early as the morning after the storm to deliver much needed supplies, including water, gas, and essentials, to communities hit hardest by the hurricane.

Nichols also participated in the Fill the Trailer program, making four trailer deliveries fully stocked with supplies from Polk County to West Green Baptist Church in Coffee County, followed by an additional two trips with a portable cooker to ensure the workers repairing the damage left by the storm were properly fed.

Spurlin and the board members thanked Nichols for his hard work and selflessness, presenting him with a commemorative certificate to honor his going above and beyond for those in need.
