JACKSON, Tenn. — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College was outscored in the third and fourth innings of Thursday’s Southern States Athletic Conference baseball tournament game, 15-1.
The Stallions won the ballgame.
It took a massive comeback effort — including a seven-run eighth — but ABAC was on top in a 24-23 score.
ABAC was scheduled to play Friday, but bad weather has pushed them to Saturday. The Stallions are to play Loyola at 10 a.m. Should they keep winning, the SSAC championship will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
Thursday was not a good day for pitchers, but it was an excellent day for hitters. Mobile rapped out 28 hits in 52 at-bats. The Stallions were 25-of-54.
Perhaps shockingly, only five ABAC hits went for extra bases, including a grand slam in the eighth by Cristofer Walley. Walley and Dylan Davis drove in four runs apiece. Cooper Scruggs scored five and Harrison Childers went a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate.
Owen Lamb earned the win.
After a rough start by Trypp Lumpkin saw him surrender 11 earned runs in 2 3/3 innings, and the first two relievers give up 10 over the next three frames, ABAC settled down.
Dawson Harrelson, Nicholas Milbrandt, Lalan Ellis and Lamb combined for a mere two runs.
Only one of Mobile’s eight pitchers gave up no runs. That reliever only pitched 1/3 of an inning. Four Mobile errors did not help their cause.
ABAC was cruising early, a 6-1 lead at the end of the second. Then the bottom fell out and they trailed 16-6. They got one back in the bottom of the fourth, Cameron Campbell singling in Walley.
The Stallions began chipping away after, closing the gap to 16-12 after six.
Five played for Mobile in the seventh and ABAC countered with four.
Chasin Cash brought in Joe Fisher. Childers drove in Campbell. There were two down when Davis forced an infield error and Quinten Rawls and Cash scurried home for a 21-16 score.
One inning later, they had the lead, every run scoring when two were out.
Fordham was on first after reaching on an infield error. Mobile recorded two strikeouts and Brayden Fordham could only move up a base on a wild pitch.
Cash singled him in. Two batters later, the bases were loaded. Back-to-back walks to Rawls and Davis narrowed the deficit to 21-19.
Walley then stepped up and delivered a grand slam to put the Stallions ahead 23-21.
Mobile tied in the ninth with two runs, giving ABAC a chance to walk it off.
Childers doubled with one out and was still there with two, when Scruggs came in as a pinch runner. Rawls extended the inning with a walk, then Davis singled to win the game.
Wednesday, the Stallions started the SSAC championship with a 9-7 victory over Thomas University.
