A man shot by Norman, Oklahoma officers Sunday threatened to shoot “anything that looks like a Muslim,” because of the recent terrorist attacks in France, according to a 911 call.
Mark James Riedel, 47, called 911 Sunday night telling dispatch he was dealing with severe mental illness. According to Sarah Jensen, Norman public safety information officer, Reidel may have also pointed a gun at officers and made statements about wanting police to shoot him.
Officers responded to the Norman address around 5 p.m. where they attempted to make contact and speak with Riedel from outside the house.
Riedel was uncooperative and told communications personnel, via a second 911 call, that the officers on-scene seemed to be ignoring him. When he hung up the phone from the second call, he went out his front door with a pistol in his hand.
Several officers gave verbal commands for him to put the weapon down, but he did not.
Two officers fired, incapacitating Riedel. He remains in stable condition Monday at OU Medical Center.
Officers immediately rendered assistance to Riedel until relieved by medical personnel. EMSStat transported Riedel to an area hospital. No other citizens or officers were injured during the incident.
The Officers, Lt. Clay Bolin and Officer Edward Nickerson, have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Officers found a loaded handgun at the scene.
Below is a transcript of the call.
Dispatcher: Norman 911. What’s the location of your emergency?
Riedel: Yeah, I’m dealing with, uh, some severe mental illness.
Dispatcher: Okay, where are you at?
Riedel: I’m sure you can get that off the caller ID.
Dispatcher: No, I need to know where you are, sir.
Riedel: I’m gonna go out there and just start shootin’ anything that looks like a Muslim after what they did to France
After several attempts from the dispatcher to keep Riedel talking, he hung up, but called again about 15 minutes later.
Dispatcher: Norman 911. What’s the location of your emergency?
Riedel: Nah, it’s no emergency. You guys seem to be ignoring me. I’m just gonna start shootin’ at cars.
After an attempt from the dispatcher to keep Riedel talking, he hung up again.
