SEATTLE — Jarred Kelenic kicked a water cooler and so Cade Marlowe is getting his shot at the big leagues with the Seattle Mariners. Marlowe started Thursday for the for the M’s in left field against the Minnesota Twins.

According to many sources, Kelenic broke his foot with the kick, which came out of frustration after striking out against the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, July 19. Kelenic was placed on the injured list. The Mariners needed another outfielder. Marlowe, who had been playing with the AAA Tacoma Rainiers, will now get his chance.

The Mariners’ website lists that Marlowe will wear No. 18. In his debut with Seattle, he was eighth in the batting order, going 0-3 with a walk. The walk, coming against Pablo Lopez in his second ever plate appearance, saw him extend the at-bat seven pitches to reach base. No fly balls were hit his way in the contest, a 5-0 win for the Mariners.

Marlowe, a Tiftarea Academy and West Georgia alumnus, was a 20th round draft pick of Seattle in 2019.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to see some dreams come true,” said former Tiftarea head coach Brad Porter in a tweet. Referring to Marlowe and his son, Cole Porter, he said, “2023 has been a blessing. I’m overjoyed for these two dudes.”

Though he was hitting .255 with the Rainiers, Marlowe saw a 17-game hit streak ended July 19. In the past few days, he has made highlight reels for a four-steal game and a juggling catch on a short fly. In June, he had a 5-hit game on his birthday.

To go along with his average, he has 11 homers, 47 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.
