Brunswick edges Colquitt as Tifton Invitational ends

TIFTON — Jabril Heck completed a three-point play with 35 seconds remaining in Saturday’s basketball game at the Tifton Invitational to give the Brunswick Pirates a 58-57 lead over the Colquitt County Packers. That ultimately led to a 60-57 Brunswick win.
Colquitt’s game was one of six played Saturday as Lowndes beat North Florida Educational Institute, 79-48, Cook edged Pelham, 45-38 and Dougherty beat Ware County, 64-58, and Lake Wales stormed back to beat Valdosta, 70-57. Tift defeated Westlake, 78-48, in the other contest.

Heck’s bucket was the first lead for Brunswick since two minutes remained in the 1st quarter and came after they had chipped away a Colquitt advantage that had been as much as 13 points in the 3rd quarter.
Roger Davis, who finished with 24 points, keyed the big push for the Bucs over the final eight minutes. His shot made it a three-point affair with 5:30 left and down to one two minutes later. Jalen Jackson tied it 15 seconds later, but DaNas Andrews hit a single free throw to push it back to 55-54. Skyler Baggs retied it at 55, but a Pirate turnover led to a foul, Andrews making both shots with 52 seconds remaining.
Seconds later, they would foul Heck on a made basket. Colquitt had two final chances, but Heck stole the ball and scored on a layup. A 3-point attempt by the Pack would miss the mark in the final seconds.
Andrews led the way with 17, followed by Cameron Singletary’s 13 and Shaheem Ponder’s 10. Other than Davis, Brunswick received 17 points from Heck.
Lake Wales trailed by eight points after the 1st quarter, but outscored Valdosta, 23-5, in the 2nd.
The ‘Cats closed to a single point in the 3rd on a Brandon Sharper triple, but the Highlanders returned with a basket by Joshua Cobb, then five points from Rishun Williams to finish the period. Lake Wales was 13-17 from the free throw line in the 4th.

Points leaders for the Highlanders were Strahinja Jovanovic with 16, Walter Covington with 15 and Williams with 12. Valdosta was topped by Brandon Sharper’s 11 and John Slater’s 9.
Lowndes jumped out to a 50-18 halftime lead on NFEI. The Eagles outscored the Vikings, 15-9, in the 3rd, but by then it was far too late for a successful comeback.
The Vikings had 14 points from Christian Knight and 12 from Dylan Jarvis. NFEI was paced by 16 from Jaquan Reeves and 15 from Jaleel Davis. They dressed only six players from the game.
Dougherty and Ware stayed close for their contest. Ware was ahead by one point after the 1st period, but the surging Trojans took over from there.
Ervin Nard scored 16 for Ware, with 14 more coming from Sammy Burley. Dougherty’s leaders were David Quimby (12) and Terry Lewis and Charles Porter (10 each).
In a battle of former region rivals, the Cook Hornets took off in the second half to defeat the Pelham Hornets. Ahead 20-19 at halftime, they scored 12 points to Pelham’s 7 in the 3rd.
Leading scorers were Tavian Allen (15) and Travenski Jackson (13) for Cook and Clarence Almond (9) and Cassius Allen (9) for Pelham.
During halftime of the Valdosta-Lake Wales contest, former Tift County Blue Devil Travis Williams had his high school jersey presented to him by Coach Tommy Blackshear, who now heads Cook.
