The Turner County Rebels hosted their first Region 2-A game of the season Friday and made it a good night by defeating the Lanier County Bulldogs, 27-0.
Turner took the ball after the opening kickoff and went 68 yards in nine plays for their first score. Quan Williams would go 5-5 and Cederick Leggett ran the ball the final five yards. Oscar Velasco’s kick was good and it was 7-0.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt on their first possession after failing to convert a first down and Turner started their next drive with great field field position. In a drive that lasted 12 plays and carried them into the second quarter, Williams connected with Lorenzo Bolden for the four-yard touchdown. Velasco’s kick was again good.
Turner’s defense held firm in the first, holding Lanier to a mere 24 total yards, but were unable to push any more points across in the half. They would be intercepted once and turned the ball over on downs on another possession. Williams, who completed his first seven passes of the game, was 8-12 in the first half for 74 yards. They had 140 total yards.
In the third quarter, Lanier turned the ball over on downs and the Rebels marched 40 yards in six plays. Williams capped it with a 15-yard touchdown run, but the point after try was no good.
Turner would score once more. Williams tossed a 69-yard bomb to Nate Martin and three plays later, Leggett ran it in for his second touchdown of the contest at 2:37 in the third. Velasco’s kick was good.
The Rebels finished with 278 total yards, 99 rushing on 33 carries and were 13-19 passing for 169. Lanier only mustered 62 total yards, all rushing. They were 1-8 passing, but for no yards.
Leggett led the way with 44 yards on 13 carries for two scores. Williams added 27 and a touchdown and accounted for all of their passing yards on 13-17. Martin caught two for 82 yards and had a single rush for 17.
Turner has won three straight after an 0-2 start and will go to Folkston to play Charlton County next week. Lanier drops to 1-4.
