VALDOSTA — Gasoline prices slipped slightly over the past week in South Georgia, following state and national trends.

The average price for a regular gallon of gas in Valdosta Thursday was $3.13, down three cents from a week earlier, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

The lowest price reported Thursday in Valdosta was $2.89 per gallon at a store on Gornto Road, according to the price tracking website gasbuddy.com. That does not include prices at buyer’s clubs, where only card-holding members get the lowest prices.

In Tifton, the lowest price reported Thursday was $2.99 per gallon at a store on South Central Avenue.

Valdosta was tied with Macon and Columbus Thursday for the seventh-highest average gas price among the 15 Georgia fuel markets monitored by AAA. The three cities were below Savannah, Hinesville, Brunswick, Atlanta, Athens and Albany but above Warner Robins, Rome, Gainesville, Dalton, Catoosa and Augusta.

Nationally, the average price of gasoline Thursday was $3.36 per gallon, down three cents in seven days, while Georgia’s average of $3.17 per gallon was also down three cents in the same period of time, the auto club said.

A storm system forming in the Atlantic may pose a threat to falling gas prices. “Since today, 8/29, is my birthday, my wish is that this potential tropical storm fizzles quickly,”  said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “And the arrival of September means cheaper winter-blend gasoline is almost here, which always helps take pressure off pump prices.”
