BAXLEY — Tift County’s Lady Devils swim team won their 12th consecutive region championship Monday, but a third-place finish meant the Blue Devils missed out after 10 consecutive victories.

Tift’s girls’ swim run continued by the slightest of margins at the 1-6A meet. The Lady Devils finished the afternoon with 218 points and Richmond Hill had 204. It was a two-team race for the girls — Colquitt County was third at 42.

Richmond Hill won the boys with 181, with Camden County second at 165 and Tift third with 120. Valdosta was fourth at 19.

Head coach Ivey Vickers described the win as a “total team effort.” Though they had won 11 of these in as many years, Vickers confessed to perhaps being a bit nervous Monday. “I was probably under the table,” she said.

Tift’s first win of the day was a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle. Brynna Burke won in 2:03 and Kendall Sasser was second in 2:09.

Jovia Burke won the 100 butterfly in 57.27 seconds, barely a half-second ahead of teammate Mary Frances Dove (57.77). Brynna Burke earned a victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:23, beating Anna Glover of Richmond Hill by 1/25th of a second.

The Lady Devils’ fourth win came from Anna Lupo in the 100-yard backstroke, which was a 1-2 finish over her sister, Abby. Anna swam in 1:04 and Abby in 1:05.

Abby Lupo, Brynna Burke, Raylee Walker and Sasser won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:55, six seconds over Richmond Hill.

Depth was a tremendous asset. In races like the 500, the Lady Devils had five swimmers in the top six, and they had

Tift had five girls teams in the 400 freestyle relay.

TCHS might have gotten an assist from the weather as well. Used to an outdoor pool, they were to have had more comforts at the Appling County Aquatic Center, the host facility for region. But outdoor conditions combined with a hot pool created so much fog, doors had to be opened for everyone to see. “I about froze to death,” Vickers said.

State swim will be Feb. 6-10 at Georgia Tech. Multiple swimmers have made their cuts to compete and Vickers is hopeful of seeing them in the finals.
