VALDOSTA — South Georgia can look forward to clear skies and warmer temperatures in the coming week, forecasters said Friday.

The National Weather Service’s forecasts for both Valdosta and Tifton for next week show sunny skies by day and clear skies at night.

“There’s not a lot going on,” said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.

A high pressure system has settled over South Georgia and isn’t going anywhere for a while, bringing the dry, warm weather, he said.

“Rain chances through Wednesday at least will be less than 5%,” said Kristian Oliver, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.

Kines said a frontal system expected to move into the region late in the week could bring some showers and a thunderstorm.

The forecast shows high temperatures in Valdosta and Tifton in the upper 80s and lower 90s during the next week. Both Oliver and Kines said that puts the daytime highs in line with the normal average temperatures for this time of year.

Both forecasters also said there was little chance of severe weather in the coming week.

Another point both meteorologists agreed on was the need to watch events in the Gulf of Mexico for the next few days. A tropical disturbance is expected to form, though details this far out are sketchy.

“It’s not out of the question to think there may be a hurricane in the Gulf late next week,” which would likely mean heavy rains and windy weather in South Georgia, Kines said.
