According to SFC Ron Warren, commander of Tifton’s GSP Post 13, the fatal wreck occurred at approximately 1:38 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of I-75, near mile marker 68.
Warren said that a 2003 Ford Mustang driven by Colton Reece, 21, of Bear Creek, Ala., was traveling in the inside lane of I-75 when the vehicle struck a piece of tire lying in the middle of the highway. The Mustang traveled into the inside shoulder and Reece over-corrected, causing the car to rotate clockwise and travel back onto the roadway. The car then struck the trailer the semi was pulling, and got caught under the left side rear wheels of the trailer. Both vehicles came to rest in the outside lane.
Reece’s passenger, Megan Danielle McCardel, 19, also of Bear Creek, Ala., was killed at the scene. Warren said that all involved were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Neither Reece nor the semi’s driver were injured.
No charges have been filed at this time. Members of the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team are continuing their investigation.
