TIFTON — Several drug arrests, including a large marijuana bust, have been made by local authorities over the past week.

Pedro Elias Guzman, 32, of Tifton, was arrested Thursday after Tift County sheriff’s deputies say they caught him with nearly three pounds of marijuana. The arrest was the result of undercover operations by deputies. Guzman was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

In another incident around 8:12 p.m. Thursday, Tifton Police officers arrested Marcus Lamar Davis, 21, of Tifton, on charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Working on a tip about someone selling drugs at Hidden Oaks Apartments, officers saw Davis and attempted to speak to him. Officer Shane Benefield said Davis began to run but the officer was able to catch him and bring him to the ground. Benefield said that Davis refused to remove one of his hands from his pocket while being handcuffed. Benefield said that after he told Davis twice to remove his hand from the pocket the officer struck a pressure point in the man’s arm and he finally pulled out the hand.

Benefield said that Davis was handcuffed and searched and police found six off-white rocks in a clear plastic bag in the man’s right front pants pocket.

At about 9:21 p.m. Friday, Tifton Police Officer Jared Godwin was flagged down on Highway 82 by Bill McDaniel who said that another man was stealing flowers from his father’s shop, Bob’s Flowers on South Central Avenue. Godwin said that while he talked to McDaniel a man came out of some bushes carrying three boxwood plants worth $5 each and four other bushes valued at $5 each.

Godwin arrested the man, Bobby Lee Cannon, 58, of Tifton and searched him. He said he found a matchbox in Cannon’s pocket with two apparent crack rocks inside. Cannon was charged with possession of cocaine and theft by taking.

At about 2:42 a.m. Saturday, Tifton police officers responded to a 911 call about a fight on Commerce Way and talked to the 911 caller, Carl Shannon Russell, 19, of Tifton. Officer Jason Klug said that while talking to Russell he smelled alcohol and asked him how much he had been drinking. Klug said Russell said he had drank a few beers and had also done a “bump” of cocaine. Klug said another officer told him that Russell had tried to kick a plastic bag underneath a car.

The officers investigated the bag and found two pills inside that they suspected was the drug MDMA, or Ecstasy. Russell was arrested and charged with possession of MDMA and possession of alcohol by a minor.

At about 2:40 a.m. Sunday, Tifton police responding to another fight call arrested four men and a juvenile on several charges including drug charges.

Godwin was dispatched to DH Food Store on Fifth Street to investigate a claim of a fight about to start. When he arrived he talked to some witnesses who told him Joseph Manuel Velez, 18, of Tifton, had a handgun and had left saying he would come back with his “boys.”

Godwin began patrolling the area looking for Velez but was dispatched back to the store. There he saw a green Ford Contour backing out attempting to leave. He turned on his siren lights to stop the car.

Godwin said that as the car stopped the back passenger side door opened and Ronall Lee Crist, 18, of Lenox, jumped out. Godwin ordered him back inside the car.

There were five people inside the car and other officers arrived and got them out one at a time. Godwin said the driver, Velez, smelled strongly of alcohol. Godwin said that while searching the car officers found a bag of cocaine and found a bag of marijuana outside the car. All five occupants were arrested.

Velez was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, underage possession of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol. Crist was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. Bryan Lee Yballa, 19, of Tifton, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and underage possession of alcohol. Ricardo Gutierrez, 18, of Tifton, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine and underage possession of alcohol. A 16-year-old Tifton boy was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and underage possession of alcohol.
