TIFTON — Ten Blue Devils and Lady Devils will hit the road for this week for the Class 6A traditional state tournament meet at the Macon Coliseum after qualifying at sectionals sites over the weekend.
Addison Braswell won first at the girls sectionals at Houston County High Friday at 130 pounds. Sadie Davis (125) and Debraysia Doward (190) placed second at the same meet. At Valdosta High Saturday, Bo Bryant (113 pounds) and Javon Bateman (157) were also runners-up in their weight classes.
Zanyia Knight (115) was fourth at Houston, with Samantha Vicars (235) earning fifth to barely miss qualifying. The Devils additionally placed Steven Zheng (144) in fourth, Dawson McMillan (165) in sixth and Antron Johnson (120) and Danny Freeman (215) both in seventh.
The traditional state meet begins Friday for all of Tift’s wrestlers. Those fortunate enough to make it to the finals and the consolation semifinals will be back Saturday morning.
Region 1-6A did especially well Saturday in Valdosta. Camden County, Colquitt County, Valdosta and Tift were all in the top eight for points. Forty-six percent of those placing in the top four were all from Region 1. Seven of the 14 finals had both wrestlers from the same region and every final had at least one.
Braswell won by pin and a 3-1 score to reach the finale. There, she recorded a pin 18 seconds into the second period over Liliana Mulero of New Hampstead.
Davis had a major decision win and a pin in the first two rounds. Abigail Sekajipo of Greenbrier pinned her in the championship.
Bateman again ran into Camden’s Brock Weaver in the 157-pound finals, with Weaver winning on points. Bateman earned technical falls in his first three matches, including in the first period of his first match.
Bryant had a pin and a technical fall before surviving 7-6 against Jayden Ramone of East Coweta in the semis. Camden’s Bradley Patterson downed Bryant in the finals.
Doward had two pins in her first two rounds before dropping a 15-3 match to Aurora Edwards of Brantley County. Knight fell in her first match at Houston, but bounced back with a 19-second pin and a wild 15-14 victory before dropping the third-place match to Michelle Kowalsky of Evans.
Zheng had two technical fall wins and a major decision — all in wrestlebacks — to reach the third-place match. Harrison’s Jayden Hawkins won 12-4 over Zheng in the consolation final.
Johnson, Freeman and McMillan all advance to the state finals despite entering region as fourth seeds. McMillan made it to the semifinals before falling to Camden.
Freeman wrestled two overtime matches, splitting results. Johnson, who had his region tournament ended early, came back to beat the Lowndes opponent who beat him a week earlier.
Vicars won her first-round match by pin.
