Three more region wins for TCHS tennis

TIFTON — Tift County tennis teams won three out of four Region 1-6A matches during the week, sweeping Valdosta and splitting with Colquitt County.
The Lady Devils were 4-1 winners over Valdosta on Thursday, the victories all coming in straight sets.
Madison Garner and Perrin Turner won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-0 and Kenyaria Morrow and Kate Carpenter won in the other doubles slot, 7-5, 6-3.
Abby Lupo won an easy 6-1, 6-0 match at No. 2 singles, and Sutton Sheppard was nearly as quick with a 6-1, 6-4 score. Riley Griffin went to a third set, but Valdosta was able to win its only match.
The Blue Devils did win all five of their Valdosta matches, and they so in a grand total of 11 sets.
Ethan Van Orman and Isaac Beck had a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and it was a 6-1, 6-3 victory for Matthew Layfield and Seth Denham at No. 1.
In singles, Josh Hellman prevailed 6-3, 6-1 and Elijah Hellman had scores of 6-1, 6-4 Maitrey Patel split his first two sets, 6-1, 5-7 before bouncing back in the third, 6-3.
On Tuesday, the Blue Devils won for the first time in nine years over Colquitt County’s boys team, taking four of five matches in the process.
Singles did not need any extra sets to win all three of their matches.
Patel was a 6-0, 6-1 winner. Elijah Hellman had that in reverse, 6-1, 6-0 and Josh Hellman earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Denham and Layfield needed extra time, but prevailed in two, 6-1, 6-6 (7-4). Colquitt’s only ‘W’ came at No. 2 doubles, where Jack Medina and Adam Beck made them more than earn it. The two fell in their first set 4-6, but tied the score after a 6-2 second set. Colquitt won the third, 3-6.
Two girls matches between Tift and Colquitt went three sets on Feb. 25. The sides split wins, but the Lady Packers went back to Moultrie with an overall 3-2 win.
Sheppard was the only singles winner for TCHS and had sets of 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4. Carpenter and Morrow won at NO. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3.
Turner and Garner fell in a marathon, 3-6, 6-6 (7-2) and 3-6. Lupo and Griffin dropped 1-6, 2-6 matches.
