VALDOSTA — Valdosta High is probably quite happy not to see Tift County on a baseball diamond again this season. The Blue Devils completed the sweep in Friday’s doubleheader, 11-5 and 7-0, performances even more dominating than the scores.
John Davis hit a home run in each game, and Landon Parrish and Tyler VanSumeren additionally went yard in the first contest. And three days after Davis two-hit the Wildcats in five innings, Will Pridgen and VanSumeren one-hit them over seven.
The series was the Region 1-6A openers for both teams. From here, Tift has Richmond Hill, who was swept by Lowndes. Valdosta plays Camden County, which was swept by Colquitt County.
Tift took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third in the opener Friday. Valdosta rallied for three runs and for a moment it seemed like the series might get much closer. That changed in the fifth inning.
With VanSumeren, Parrish and Sam Pritchard loaded the bases with one out, the Wildcats went to their bullpen. Mason Grist’s squeeze bunt saw all hands safe, including VanSumeren at the plate. Ean Weldon drove in Parrish on a fielder’s choice and it was 6-3.
Davis homered in the sixth. The bottom fell out for Valdosta in the seventh, when four more plated, all with two outs. Davis tripled in Weldon, Davis then scoring on an error on the same play.
Mac Brooks kept the inning going with a hit, then VanSumeren unloaded to make it 11-3. Valdosta scored two in the bottom half but the Blue Devils were never in danger.
Weldon drove in Pritchard for the day’s first run in the second inning. Parrish had a three-run shot in the third, plating VanSumeren and Jake Spurlin.
Ryan Whitley went 6 1/3 innings for the win on the mound, striking out nine. VanSumeren and Davis had three hits. Parrish picked up three RBIs.
