Tiftarea has four double winners at region track meet

ALBANY — It was a big day for Peyton Cleghorn and many of her Tiftarea Academy teammates Wednesday at the Region 3-3A meet at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Cleghorn swept the hurdles events. She won the 100 hurdles in 16.22 seconds, almost two seconds faster than second place and was two seconds ahead of second in the 300 hurdles. Cleghorn won the 300 in 47.87 seconds. Cleghorn added a second place in the 100 meters in 12.99.

Joining Cleghorn in the Lady Panthers’ winners’ circle was Jasmine Olson, who also won two events. Olson won long jump in 16-6.5. Like Cleghorn, Olson dominated as no other jumper cleared 16 feet. Triple jump was the same, Olson getting 31-10 when the next best was 30-2.

The Panthers had three first places in their events.

Temond Marcus flung the shot put Wednesday a distance of 45-2, nearly three feet better than his nearest competitor.

J.R. Walker won the 400 meters at the Region 3-3A meet Wednesday at Albany’s Hugh Mills Stadium. Walker ran in 53.1 seconds, a second ahead of second place.

Walker combined with Kaiden Richardson, Temond Marcus and Caden Grier to win the 4×100 relay, edging Brookwood 45.53 to 45.62 seconds. Deerfield-Windsor and Valwood were also in the finish line in under 46 seconds.

Parker Pope and Elijah Smith were 2-3 in high jump, each clearing 5-2. Madi Shoultz threw the shot 27-2.5, good for second place. Raelyn Owens was third in the same event at 27-2.

Grier was second in triple jump at 38-8.85 and third in long jump at 19-0.25. Walker was third in discus, throwing 116-7.

Hayden Matthews placed fourth in the 110 hurdles in 20.02, then had a fifth-place finish in the 300 hurdles in 53.22 seconds.

Both Tiftarea squads were fourth as teams. For those qualifying, state will be in May at Strong Rock Christian.

Boys 100: Reed Jackson (7th).

Girls 100 hurdles: Cloe Sercer (6th).

Boys 200: Marcus (6th) and J.R. Walker (8th).

Girls 200: Olson (7th).

Boys 300 hurdles: Sam Faircloth (7th).

Girls 300 hurdles: Sercer (6th).

Girls 800: Maci Shoultz (8th).

Boys 1,600: Pierce Fulp (8th).

Girls 4×100: 5th.

Boys 4×400: 7th.

Girls 4×400: 4th.

Boys 4×800: 4th.

Boys discus: Faircloth (6th).

Girls discus: Madi Shoultz (4th) and Maci Shoultz (5th).

Boys long jump: Matthews (8th).

Boys shot put: Colton Powell (7th).

Boys triple jump: Hunter Monk (8th).
